Comments: I was a SP4 electrician stationed with the 97th Eng. Battalion, Construction Co. C. in Verdun 1956-1959. We first lived in quonset huts outside Maginot Caserne. Later we moved into one wing of the new hospital while we were building the golf course next to it. Later we moved back to Maginot Caserne until I rotated back to the states. I have good memories of my time in France. I spent lots of TDY in Chalons on the airforce base while working on a nearby tank farm. I also went to Chinon Pipeline School and Utility NCO School in Murnau, Germany. I'm looking for old buddies that served with me during my time in Verdun. If anyone has any pictures of the Chicago area and other installations outside the Maginot Caserne, I would sure like to hear from you. Check out the 97th Eng. page on Military.com.

Comments: My good friend James Beauchamp left a message on your website dated 4/22/2008. He also had a Verdun website called 256th Signal Co. (SPT). He must have been working on it and left it unfinished because I can no longer get access to it. Sadly, my friend Jim, or Bo, as I called him, passed away after surgery during the early hours of 12/17/2011. We both worked in the photo lab. I thought I'd leave the sad news on your website because many people have visited both sites and I don't know how else to notify people. I miss him greatly and thanks for your very fine website as well.

That meant every draftee went home a slick sleeve, and the RA's went home as PFC's. Fortunately I had mine before I got there. For those of you in Orleans, we irreverantly referred to the statue of Jeanne d'Arc as "Joanie on the Pony."

Comments: My father, MSG Robert R. Daily, was the supply sergeant for the 7965 unit at Maginot Caserne from 1952 to 1955. I attended the Verdun American School on post in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. We lived in three different locations: Varennes, Eix, a little village between Verdun and Etain and finally, on 32 Rue de Colmar in Verdun. I have been to a great many of the locations depicted in these pictures. They brought back very fond memories of my three years in France. When we lived in Eix, I could ride my bike to Fort Douamont and Fort De Vaux. My friends and I played in old fortifications all over the area and my mother would have had a stroke if she knew some of the stuff we picked up. I remember going to the theater and bowling alley on Gribauval Caserne. The army also ran a theater called the Vox in downtown Verdun. Again, I really enjoyed the pictures.

Comments: 56-59 Signal Depot Verdun. I looked at the pic's again and found spoted Angelo Cinti. I was in his room along with-Suske, Womack, Vick, Yatrose, Westmorland, Barnes. Excuse my spelling.A young kid named Tom Person and myself were placed in the above guys room for a short time. Pearson got out early. I tried to look him up in 1976. I found his family and they told me he had died right after being discharged. I thing he was 20.I sent his family pic's of him after I got home. I had taken my 10 year old son on a 2week cycle trip down along the Mississippi river to New Orleins.I also looked up Sgt James A. Harper. My son and I stayed with him over night.19 of us went to school at Ft Lee together and all were shiped to 7768 Co. Pearson, Harper ,Hatfield. Hatfield died in a car wreck along with Sgt Fernandeze on the curve over the bridge on the way to town. Do you rember the cook in our co that bought the bar near that curve ? I think his name was Matt ??? He also louned money. Payday he'd be right there to get his bucks lol. Chapman was another of the 19. He bought a car and killed two Polish Grd's. I ended up in the brig. lol I did receive an Honerable dischage. Thank God for that. I use the VA for my meds etc. Capt Elliot came up to me and said now your a man. lol I went in the Army on my 17th birthday. I smile about my brig time often. The brig really sucks lol.

Comments: Do any of you remember Chez Mamie or was it called Chez Mimi. I think it was on D603 or N603, the highway (2 lane mostly) between Verdun and Etain. The owner was a nice, friendly, well-dressed French lady. The restaurant had a main floor and a small upper floor (booths with curtains..lol). Mostly GI's went there. It was about the only restaurant in Verdun where you could bring your girl friend or just a "friend" without any grumblings by the waiters or other diners. You know what I mean. Be great if anyone had a photo or two or a memory about Chez Mamie(Mimi). My email address = mesaman60@yahoo.com.

My dad, SFC Ralph Myers (deceased 1978) was assigned to the 7768. He had a Japanese wife, Ayako, and two sons, Hank and Juny who were in the 2nd grade. I think we returned State-side in 1956. As 2010 marks my 55th birthday, I am hoping to return to visit Verdun. Being born in France, I have been expected by others to speak French and represent her culture. So much so, that I have in the past half century imbibed enough French joie de vivre...mostly a la vin rouge avec fromage...to satisfy that expectation.

Comments: I was in France from July/Aug 1953 thru 1955. That was as the guest of the French...smile I went through Verdun to my permanent post at the 306 Field Hosp in Vassincourt.Fr. (Tent City) After being there a short while, gladly, I was sent TDY back to Verdun to the 767 Dent Det at the hosp. I later returned to the 306 and we moved to Fountainbleau, Fr to share operation of a Station Hosp. In Fontainbleau and on Verdun TDY duty I worked as a Dental Tech. Great duty and worked for a great bunch of people. Fontainbleau was Capt Kliszcz, Wisc - Capt Contessa, Penn. as clinic chief. Had a great tour and returned to ZI Christmas day of 55. Anyone that was over there at the same time, please contact me. Love to hear from you... Got lots of pics to share....

Austin, co C, 97th) and my mother and I joined him at that time- we lived at 50 Rue de Paris, and saw the house last week when we visited. Except for the downtown area being enclosed (couple of street closed along the river) not a lot has changed...visited Fort Douaumont, drove around the town. I attended school on the base during the time I was there (Age 6-8). Was a great visit, both my grown kids were with me (ages 27/29) to see where the 'old man' was young once!...Great memories...my son was happiest when we found a McDonalds...that has changed!! Later we moved into one wing of the new hospital while we were building the golf course next to it. Later we moved back to Maginot Caserne until I rotated back to the states. I have good memories of my time in France. I spent lots of TDY in Chalons on the airforce base while working on the nearby tank farm. I also went to Chinon Pipeline School and Utility NCO School in Murnau, Germany. I'm looking for old buddies that served with me during my time in Verdun. Comments: GREAT SITE. THANKS FOR ALL THE HARD WORK. I WAS THERE TILL THE BITTER END. WE WERE THE LAST GROUP OF GI'S AT THE 56TH GENERAL HOSPITAL. WE WERE KIND OF FORGOTTEN BY THE BRASS FOR ALMOST 3 MONTHS UNTIL ABOUT AUG 1967. WE WERE LIVING ON K-RATIONS AND HEINEKEN BEER AND KOOL-AID FOR THE LAST 2 MOS. WE SLEPT ON OLD MATTRESSES IN A WAREHOUSE WITH JUST COLD WATER SHOWERS. WE LOOKED LIKE A BUNCH OF HIPPIES AND CUT OUR FATIGUE SHORTS OFF AND WORE TEE-SHIRTS ALL THE TIME. WE LOADED A SEMI-TRUCK FULL OF STUFF ONCE A DAY (USALLY ONCE EVERY 3 DAYS...LOL). THE OLD FRENCH PEOPLE THAT HAD WORKED AT THE HOSPITAL BROUGHT US A HOT MEAL ONCE A WEEK (THERE WERE ABOUT 10 OF US). WE GAVE MOST OF THE LEFT-OVER SUPPLIES TO THESE PEOPLE. THAT WAS THE BEST 3MOS IN MY 3 YEARS. I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANYBODY ABOUT VERDUN. I WORKED IN THE REGISTRAR'S OFFICE IN THE HOSPITAL FROM APRIL 66-AUG 67.....

I spent lots of TDY in Chalons on the air force base while working on the nearby tank farm. I also went to the Chinon Pipeline School. I spent some time in Massweiler, Germany with the 12th Ord. Bn. in 1956. I'm looking for old buddies that served with me during this time. Check out the 97th Engineer Unit page on Military.com. Comments: I am SP5 Peter C Mennell, HQ Co, Maginot Caserne, Verdun (1965 - 1967). I first worked at Chicago Area, then on a little post newspaper called "The Maginot Line", and later in the Maginot Caserne HQ Co orderly room after the paper was closed down. Just prior to our pull-out in '67 I helped load ammunition from bunkers in the woods to be taken to Germany by truck. Anyone else remember that?? I would love to hear from anyone who was there when I was, or who knew me, to exchange memories of a wonderful time. Those years in France were the best of my life; if only I could have understood or appreciated that at the time. But I'm probably not alone there... Thanks for a great site!

Comments: I and my wife, Carol Ann, lived in Verdun for three years between 1961 and 1964. I, an SP5, initially worked at the Education Center, Maginot Caserne. Later I worked at the Personal Property Shipment office in the "Chicago" area. Carol worked as secretary to Colonel Walter Smith, the G4, I believe, 4th Logistical Command. For most of our 3 years we lived on the economy, a 5th floor walkup apartment at 69 Ave de la 42nd Division. We loved it. We had two good French friends, Jacques and Michelle Kostka, and we spent time with them. Also 2 American friends, Tom and Sally Hawk, with the 97th Engr. Those friends made us love living in France. When the time came around for us to leave, we felt that it was a real tragedy to leave such good friends and such a beautiful country with all it had to offer us. A couple of Christmases ago, I received an email Christmas card from Jacques Kostka who had been browsing the GuestBook and saw his and his wife's names in my entry. They no longer live in Verdun, having moved to Longwy where Michelle is general manager of a museum. Ah, sometimes I wish I could return to those times of 40 years ago (My God, has it been that long!). Of course, we cannot, but it was a time in my life that I will never forget. Despite completion of two careers over those 40 years: 28 years in the Army, retiring as a SgtMajor, followed by 20 years in the Virginia Judiciary as Magistrate and Chief Magistrate, I don't believe I will ever get over missing my time in Verdun, and in France.

Except for the first few months of living in the aircraft hangar until the barracks were finished, I fully enjoyed my tour. The mud was a big problem, remember the trash cans placed at the entrance of all buildings for washing muddy shoes, don't get caught going into a building with muddy shoes.
